Bloggers Interview with dontbeallupinmyfriesdawg

This week we had a chance to chat to Nik a.k.a dontbeallupinmyfriesdawg, about why she ships Klaroline, her favourite fanfics, and what she thinks Klaus brings out to Caroline. Read what she had to say here:

KM: For all of the readers who don’t know you, why don’t you tell us about yourself?

Nik: My name is Nik. I’m a student. I start university this autumn and I’m studying politics and international relations. Klaroline is my main ship/fandom but my other interests include Brooklyn Nine, Parks & Recreation, Friends and I’m recently getting into Shadowhunters. I’m a reality tv addict and also a big Stelena shipper.

KM: Klaroline is not the easiest ship to ship; what was it about this pairing that stood out to you?

Nik: I would have to say the push-pull dynamic is what first attracted me. The first Klaroline scene I ever saw was their conversation in ‘500 Years of Solitude.’ I liked the bickering, I liked the smug look on Klaus’ face once he’d gotten under Caroline’s skin but also the fact that he had this look of wide eyed adoration on his face too. What kept me on board the ship was the complexity of the relationship: the fact that Caroline’s more like Klaus than she thinks, the fact that for once the female protagonist’s job isn’t necessarily to ‘save’ the male from himself of ‘make him a better man’. It was intriguing, to say the least.

KM: One of the special things about the Klaroline Fandom is that we are so resilient, why do you think it has been possible for us to remain so active for so long?

Nik: Honestly platforms like this. The unity amongst members of this fandom. In my experience, everyone is very friendly. I think our persistence has a lot to do with it too. We’re vocal. Whether it’s about the writers holding Klaroline hostage of the shitty writing on the show.

KM: Everyone comments on how Caroline brings out the best in Klaus, but what traits does Klaus bring out in Caroline?

Nik: I wrote a meta a while back and I mentioned this within it. For me, I think Klaus acts as a mirror for Caroline. For example, he encourages her to abandon her black and white, Mary-Sue set of morals and not just because it benefits him for her to see things his way, so she’ll think better of him but because he knows it will make things easier for her in the long run. Because she’s a vampire now and he knows from experience life comes in various shades of grey – even if he happens to dabble in the darker shades. This is an important staple of their relationship. Caroline consistently calls Klaus out on his crap but Klaus often does the same (like when Caroline murdered the 12 witches and woke Silas). I like that Klaus encourages her to embrace her vampirism and encourages her to talk about herself; to put her wants and needs first. He recognizes her, he sees her, he puts her first even over his own plans. And this is a big deal since we know Klaus will straight up dagger a blood relative if they interfere with his plans often enough.

KM: Now that we know that Candice King will be in The Originals season 5 premiere at the very least, how do you think the Klaroline will go down?

Nik: It’s hard to say. It depends on how many episodes she’s in. Julie’s being very cryptic as usual. I think they go on some sort of road trip to find Hope or Hayley? – I’m going off of spoilers here – I think they might bond then? I don’t care how it happens if I’m honest. As long as they stay true to Caroline’s character and how the ship was originally written (we can only form a prayer circle and hope)

KM: How did you choose your url?

Nik: My URL is a Degrassi reference. Jimmy (Drake’s character or as we like to call him Aubrey) is making fun of another character; because said character (J.T) badly wants to be an actor and lands a gig in a really terrible commercial for fries where he has to dress up in hip-hop clothing and tells his costar (a puppy) “Ay yo, don’t be all up my fries dawg”. Even though it’s bad he’s super excited about the commercial and invites a bunch of people to his house for a viewing party. To his chagrin everyone finds it hilarious – and not in a good way. To further mock him, Jimmy who’s present at the party says “Hey, I mean if anyone makes fun of you for this just tell the ‘Don’t be all up my fries dawg!’” and everyone laughs. It’s a lot funnier than how I’m describing it…

KM: You are a fanfiction writer, but what is it about this couple which keeps you writing about them even though they are seen by many to be a ‘dead ship’?

Nik: As I said in a previous question. It’s their dynamic, Klaroline isn’t boring. They have sooo much potential and in my opinion, they’re the type of ship that is just made for AUs if you know what I mean? I can see them in so many different timelines, universes and continents just bickering. Also, I think both Klaus and Caroline respectively are good characters to write for, if you will because they are quite complex and I feel like Caroline especially, progressed so much since season one. Plus writing for the ship just makes me happy.

KM: Your top 5 must read fics for a new reader?

Nik: Their Things (Drabble series by Angelikah – A.K.A: thetourguidebarbie – I’m gonna be cheeky and include her other two drabble series Love Anthology and These Hands), Make Some Noise (Drabble series by LaLainaJ), 52 Weeks of Klaroline (Drabble series by MrsAgentCooper), The Office by nurseholliday and Royal Decisions by these dreams go on. To be honest content from any of these writers and Lynyrd Lionheart is gold.

KM: If Klaus hadn’t made an appearance on TVD, with who you would ship Caroline?

Nik: Probably Tyler. I still ship Forwood I just think they had an expiry date. I could also see myself getting into romantic Carenzo.

KM: And lastly, what’s your one piece of advice that you would like to give the fandom?

Nik: Honestly, it’s not even worth getting into petty confrontations with non-shippers anymore either Klaroline will happen of it won’t. TVD is over and soon TO will be too. Life is short, there are so many talented writers in this fandom. Submerge yourself in fanon and read as many fics as you can (the non-canon ones are the best in my opinion) keep shipping what you love and be kind to one another.
